The Ultimate Loei Bucket List

From gruelling treks to lazy riverside strolls, Loei has it all.

Conquer Phu Kradueng National Park

This is a rite of passage for Thai adventurers. Phu Kradueng is a legendary, bell-shaped mountain that requires a challenging 5.5 km uphill trek to reach its vast plateau. But the reward is immense: a stunning landscape of grasslands, pine forests, waterfalls, and cliff-edge viewpoints like Pha Lom Sak, one of Thailand's most iconic sunset spots. It's tough, but it's an unforgettable achievement.

Step Back in Time in Chiang Khan

Get ready to fall in love with this impossibly charming town on the Mekong River. Chiang Khan's waterfront is lined with beautiful, traditional teakwood houses, now converted into guesthouses, cafes, and quirky shops. The vibe is pure relaxation. Wake up early to participate in the serene morning alms-giving to local monks, then spend your days sipping coffee and watching the slow-moving river separate Thailand from Laos.

Catch a Sunrise at Phu Ruea National Park

Want the mountain views without the Herculean effort of Phu Kradueng? Phu Ruea is your answer! The name means "Boat Mountain" because its peak resembles an upside-down boat. You can drive most of the way up and then take a short walk to the summit for a spectacular sunrise over a sea of fog. It’s famous for its freezing temperatures in the cool season, so bring a jacket!

Join the Party at the Phi Ta Khon Festival

If your timing is right (usually around June/July), you can witness one of Thailand's wildest festivals in the town of Dan Sai. The Phi Ta Khon, or "Ghost Festival," is a three-day Buddhist merit-making event famous for its colourful, raucous parades. Locals don incredible ghost masks made from carved coconut husks and dance through the streets in a party that has to be seen to be believed.

How to Get There

Loei is a bit remote, but that's what keeps it special.
