Roi Et

Roi Et: The City of 101 Gates (and One GIANT Buddha!)

Welcome to Roi Et (which literally means "One Hundred and One"), a province that perfectly captures the relaxed, authentic spirit of Isan. While the name might come from an ancient exaggeration of its 11 satellite cities, today's Roi Et has a very real, and very, very tall, claim to fame.

This is a province for travellers who want to see the real heart of the northeast, a place where local life revolves around a massive lake and faith is measured on a colossal scale.

So, What's the Vibe in Roi Et?

Roi Et is the definition of a "chill Isan city."

Phra MahaChedi Chai Mongkhon

Roi Et's Unmissable Sights

Get ready to crane your neck and then completely relax.

Stand in Awe at Wat Buraphaphiram

This is the main event. Prepare to feel tiny as you stand at the feet of Phra Phuttha Rattana Mongkhon Maha Muni, the tallest standing Buddha in all of Thailand. At a staggering 59.2 meters tall (or 67.8 meters including its base), this serene, golden-robed figure is a sight to behold. You can even climb a staircase inside the statue to various levels for a different perspective. It's the undisputed icon of the province.

Explore the Palace-Like Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkhon

In a province of giants, this chedi holds its own. Located about an hour outside the city, this is one of the largest and most elaborate pagodas in Thailand. The massive, six-tiered structure is dazzling white and gold, set on a hilltop with commanding views of the countryside. It's a major pilgrimage site and an absolutely stunning piece of architecture.

Chill Out at Bueng Phalan Chai

This isn't just a lake; it's the living room of Roi Et. Located right in the middle of the city, this large, picturesque island-park is the perfect place to unwind. You'll find the city pillar shrine, a walking-and-jogging track, flower gardens, and plenty of spots to relax. In the evening, the perimeter comes alive with food stalls and locals enjoying the cool air.

Hit the (Man-Made) Beach at Thung Kula Lake

For a quirky local experience, head to Thung Kula Lake (also known as "Isan's sea"). This large reservoir has been developed into a popular local hangout with thatched-roof restaurants built right over the water and a sandy "beach" area. It's a fun and unique way to cool down on a hot day.

How to Get There

Roi Et is quite accessible for an Isan province.

By Air: The easiest way by far is to fly. Roi Et Airport (ROI) has regular direct flights from Bangkok.

By Bus: As a provincial capital, Roi Et is well-connected by bus to Bangkok's Mo Chit station and other major cities in the northeast.
